Very relevant question - especially for next generation as lot of "work" starts getting automated.
For me personally, the answer has changed through the years. It's now mostly about the opportunity to spend time with the people i enjoy working with and can continue to learn from. I find that without a regularly scheduled joint activity, it's hard to keep friendships thriving - and work naturally provides a good avenue for a shared objective.
